Gifts for Postdoctoral Scientists

Picking a gift for a postdoctoral scientist

A postdoctoral scientist has already earned a PhD and is now spending two or three years on a fixed-term research position, often in a lab that isn't their own, chasing the publications and grant applications that make the next job possible. Long hours, grant deadlines, experiments that fail for reasons no one can explain, and the constant question of what comes after this contract. A gift that acknowledges that stretch lands well. A tee or hoodie with their title on it is something they'll wear to the lab on a Saturday, and a mug with their name is the one that survives the shared kitchen. Add their field, such as neuroscience or materials chemistry, on a second line, and the design becomes a small joke only people in their department will fully get. It's a good gift for the milestone they tend to forget to celebrate: a first paper accepted, a fellowship awarded, or the day they finally submit the thesis chapter they've been rewriting for a year.
