About this columnist gift
Columnists write under a deadline, usually for a readership they'll never meet face to face, and their work lives or dies on whether a reader keeps coming back. They spend a lot of time at a laptop with a cold coffee, rewriting the same paragraph until it sounds like them. A gift that acknowledges the craft, a tee for the writing-day uniform or a mug for the desk where the column actually gets written, tends to land better than something generic. Add their byline or the publication's name if they're comfortable with it, or keep it simple with just the word columnist. Either way you're telling them you noticed what they do for a living, which matters more to most writers than the object itself.
