Gifts from East Alton
East Alton is a small river town in Madison County, Illinois, close to the Mississippi, and people who grew up there tend to stay attached to it, whether they still live a few streets from the old high school or have moved across the state. A shirt with East Alton on it is how they claim the place at a family reunion, a homecoming game or a summer cookout where somebody always asks where you're from. Because it's a small town, the people who went there tend to know each other, so a gift that feels like it came from home lands well: a tee for the grad headed off to college, a hoodie for the one who moved away and misses the riverside, or a mug for the parent who still reads the local news every morning. Add a year or a street name on a second line and the shirt becomes a specific piece of their history rather than a generic town souvenir.
