Gifts from Lihue
Lihue is the county seat of Kauai, the small island at the northern end of Hawaii's main chain, and a lot of people's first real look at the islands starts there. A shirt with Lihue on it tends to go to someone who's been, someone who grew up there and left, or someone who's planning the trip and wants to start early. Since it's a town people visit more than a city they've lived in for generations, the gift works best when it recalls something specific: a morning on the north shore, a flight in through the little airport, the first time they saw the mountains from the water. Pair the word with a second line like Kauai or the year of the trip, and it stops being a souvenir and becomes a record. A hoodie suits the cooler evenings of someone heading back to the mainland, and a mug fits the everyday routine of anyone who still misses the islands.
