Gifts for Optical Design Engineers

Picking a gift for an optical design engineer

Optical design engineers spend their days on lens prescriptions, tolerance stacks and coating specs, often for cameras, microscopes, eyeglass lenses or the sensors inside phones and cars. They tend to be the person in the room who has already checked the ray trace twice, so a gift that acknowledges the actual work lands better than a generic engineer joke. A hoodie is useful for the cold lab or the long drive to a supplier, and a dark tee suits the kind of person who wears black to every design review. A mug on the desk is the one thing they'll see every morning during a late-stage build. If you know their specialty, such as imaging, laser systems or AR optics, put that on the second line of the design. It makes the gift feel like it was written by someone who listened to what they do all day, which is exactly what makes it theirs.
