About this chief mate gift
A chief mate is the officer who runs the deck when the captain is off watch, so they spend long stretches at sea, planning cargo, standing navigation watches and keeping the crew on schedule. Time away from home is the real cost of the job, which makes everyday gifts land well: a soft tee for a long stretch ashore, a hoodie for cold deck mornings and a mug for the bridge coffee. Put the words chief mate on the design and the gift says they've earned the rank. Add a vessel name or a company in the second line if you know it, or a year, which can mark the date they got their license or stepped up to the rank. Chief mates often leave home for months, so a shirt they can wear to the first dinner back is a practical way to say you missed them.
