About this kivalina gift
Kivalina is a small Alaska Native village on a barrier island in the Chukchi Sea, in the Northwest Arctic Borough. People there live close to the water and the seasons, and a shirt with the village name is a way for someone far away to carry it with them. I don't have reliable detail about the village's history or current community life, so I'd rather not guess at it. What I can say is that a gift like this is most meaningful when it's tied to the person: someone who grew up there, someone who moved away, or a relative who has never been and wants to show support. Put the village name on a tee, hoodie or mug and add a line that means something to them, such as the year they left, their family name or the name of their school class. A mug is a good everyday reminder, and a hoodie works well for the cold months.
