About this west berlin gift
West Berlin was an island of sorts, a city of about two million people surrounded by the Berlin Wall from 1961 until 1989, with its own government and its own street life wedged inside East German territory. People who lived there often talk about it the way sailors talk about a ship they once served on: a little defiant, a little nostalgic, and fiercely proud of what it took to keep the lights on. A West Berlin shirt suits someone who grew up there, served there, or spent a formative year in the city during the Cold War, and it also suits the history buff who has read every book on the Berlin airlift and the Wall. For the person who loves the city's cafes, its cabaret past or its museums, a mug or hoodie with West Berlin on it is a quiet nod to a place that never quite fit on a map. Add a year or a neighborhood on the second line, such as Kreuzberg, Charlottenburg or 1961, and the gift gets more personal.
