About this east berlin gift
East Berlin is a place people still talk about in the past tense, and that's part of what makes it land. The city was split from 1961 to 1989, and the people who lived on the eastern side carry that history in their stories, their accents and their family photos. A shirt or mug with East Berlin on it is a quiet way to say where they're from, or where their parents and grandparents were from, without needing to explain the whole story. It also suits someone who has visited and fell for the Ostberlin streets, the East Side Gallery, the Plattenbau blocks and the currywurst stands. For a gift, the trick is to keep it simple and let the place name do the talking. Type East Berlin in the main line and, if you want, add a neighborhood, a year they lived there, or a line like Hometown on the second line so the design feels like theirs.
