About this policy internship gift
A policy intern is usually doing the work of someone twice their pay grade: drafting memos, sitting in on hearings, reading bills at the speed of a hallway conversation, and trying to learn who actually makes decisions. The gifts that land tend to be the ones that acknowledge how much they're juggling. A light tee or a hoodie is good for the early mornings on Capitol Hill or in a think tank office, where the dress code is somewhere between casual and no one's sure. A mug is the most useful, since they'll drink a lot of coffee over a semester of briefings. Put the word policy or internship on it, or add the organization or the year, and it becomes a memento of the season they'll later describe as the one that changed their plans. If you're buying for a whole cohort, one design with each intern's name on their own shirt is a nice way to mark the summer together.
