About this mekoryuk gift
Mekoryuk is a village on Nunivak Island, off the coast of western Alaska in the Bering Sea. It's a small community, and the people who grew up there often carry that place with them wherever they end up, whether that's Anchorage, a university town or a job on the mainland. A shirt with the village name is a way to say where they're from and to start a conversation with someone who has never heard of it. Because so few people know the place, the gift works best when it's personal: add a family name, a graduation year or the year they moved away underneath the village name. For someone who's been gone a long time, a mug with Mekoryuk on it is a small daily reminder of home. For a kid who's proud of where they live, a tee or onesie with the village name is a good way to start.
