About this postdoctoral fellow gift
A postdoctoral fellow is usually on a short contract, working long hours in a lab or on a research project while job hunting for the next position. They've already survived a PhD, so a gift that acknowledges the grind without being sappy lands well. A hoodie for the cold lab or the late-night data run is practical, and a mug for the bench or the office tells them the work is noticed. Personalizing matters here: add their field, their institution's town, or the year they started, and the shirt becomes about them rather than a generic science joke. Postdocs often move between cities for each appointment, so a design with their own name or research area travels with them better than any souvenir. Many fellows also finish on a deadline, so a gift that arrives in time for a defense or a job announcement can mean more than a bigger one later.
